SUSAN MATILDA DAVIS EVANS was born 31 July 1852 in Anderson County, TX and died in Caldwell County TX on 11 Dec 1942. She was the daughter of JACKSON JONES DAVIS and his wife Elizabeth Johnson Davis. Her mother, Elizabeth, died when Susan was 13 years old, which was shortly after the Civil War. The three oldest brothers of Susan enlisted in the Confederacy, and only one, William Jefferson Davis came home from the war. The other two brothers were killed in combat. The brother and older sisters married and left home. Jack then sent Susan to Stovall Academy, which was at that time was located several miles outside what is now the town of Neches. She attended school for several years and was taught by the Rev. John Adams.

She met John Andrew Evans, who came to Anderson County several years after the war from Shelby Co. Alabama and worked for her father in the sawmill. They were married on 6 August 1872 in her fathers home, by the Rev. Adams.

John and Susan were the parents of ten children, nine of which were born in Anderson County. They moved in 1894 and settled in Wilson County, where their youngest child was born. In 1898 they left Wilson County and moved to Caldwell County, where their children grew up and married.
