Notes for Vincent Warner Shoemaker

Vincent left home at an early age and went to work in the infant oil fields. He met Alice Roberson Byrd (a recent widow) in Indiana in 1903. They married in 1904 and immediately left for thePloesti oil fields of Romania, where he was employed by an American oil company as a Superintendent. They stayed in BoiCoi 13 years, adopting a son in 1909. In 1914, Alice was pregnant and Lotti was born June 18, 1915. Since her pregnancy was difficult, Queen Marie of Romania sent her personal physician to Alice to oversee the pregnancy and delivery.

When Kaiser Wilhelm began to overrun Europe, most civilians (both British and American) were evacuated from Romania. Vincent Shoemaker and Harry Havice stayed behind to make sure the Kaiser did not get the oil fileds. This project was known as 'Scorched Earth'. The Shoemaker and Havice families left Romania in boxcars in the middle of the night and fled to Russia, then Sweeden, arriving in Stockholm at Christmas. They arrived in the United States and moved to Montana.
